This pattern was given the name ‘Thomas Sankara’ after the murder of President Thomas Sankara in Upper Volta, the present Burkina Faso. In Benin the pattern stands for success, and more specifically for the emancipation of women.

In Mali in 1993 I collected a piece of this, people there called it Sabara Ba (Big Shoes). It referred to any person of status.
