This classic design, a depiction of a rearing horse, is generally known as the Jumping Horse. In Nigeria it is traditionally worn by Igbo women at their women’s meeting in August. It is known as Je cours plus vite que ma rivale (‘I run faster than my rival’) in Ivory Coast, where it expresses the rivalry between wives because the rearing horse looks as if it were about to run in a race.
hmm not to seems tribal but not only igbo women wear Hollandais in Nigeria. it is actually widespread,Edo women are quite so fond of it that it is much appreciated if given as a gift. my mom and grandma actually own most in more than one colour and never cease to buy. i say good job these waxes have been woven into African culture over the years. Thank You Vlisco!

I was looking at this design the other day and it occured to me that the design may have been inspired by the Nigerian coat of arms. Let me explain. The horse in the design resembles the horse on the Nigerian coat of arms especially in its stance and if you look closely at the tiny markings on the design you will notice also that it looks like the confluence 'Y' symbol in the coat of arms. This may also explain why Nigerians love the design so much because they subconsciously feel a special attachment to it. This is so cool because then Vlisco connects to Africans even subconsciously!

I am writing a dissertation about this artist for my Masters in Art History. One of the figures on the artwork(representing the Axis powers) is wearing trousers made in this design. Yinka Shonibare uses African wax fabrics in many of his works. Look him up if you haven't seen them. They are wonderful!
This indeed is a wonderful fabric and we're looking forward to adding it to our shop https://shop.savannarepublic.com
